About Rajaji National Park

A magnificent wilderness sanctuary in the Shivalik ranges, where nature thrives in its pristine glory

Nestled between the Shivalik Hills and the Indo-Gangetic Plains, Rajaji National Park stands as a testament to India's rich natural heritage. Spanning an impressive 820 square kilometers across Dehradun, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal districts, this biodiverse haven represents one of Uttarakhand's most treasured ecological sanctuaries.

Named after C. Rajagopalachari, India's last Governor-General, the park's establishment story is as inspiring as its landscapes. When invited for a hunting expedition in 1948, Rajaji was so captivated by the region's extraordinary biodiversity that he advocated for its protection instead, leading to the creation of Rajaji Sanctuary.

In 1983, three sanctuaries—Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla—were unified into a single national park. The reserve achieved tiger reserve status in 2015, becoming India's 48th Tiger Reserve and Uttarakhand's second, solidifying its critical role in tiger conservation.

Strategic Ecological Corridor

Rajaji National Park serves as a vital wildlife corridor connecting Jim Corbett National Park with the forests of Himachal Pradesh. This connectivity is crucial for maintaining genetic diversity among wildlife populations, particularly for elephants and tigers.

The park's elevation ranges from 300 to 1,400 meters, creating diverse microclimates that support an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. The holy Ganges River divides the park into distinct eastern and western sections, each with unique ecological characteristics.
